Don't faint! I actually am posting a photo of finished socks! Got these done on Friday night - and I was hustling to get them finished as the Summer of Socks 2008 was starting on Saturday!

Finished Sunday 27th while watching hockey playoffs. Great fun to do even tho I finished first sock in early Feb, then had to scramble to find my notes to do 2nd sock. Printed out one of the patterns (from Color Knit) and it went walkabout and hid inside one of my copies of Spin Off, found it while looking for something else. Phew.

These socks were knit for a friend who has trouble getting socks to fit around her legs. I worked with the pattern and got it where it would fit her leg. I then decreased each inch after the ribbing until I had 48 stitches to start the heels and foot part.

I have never had anyone so happy with a pair of socks in my life...the thought that she could actually have a nice pair of hand knit socks that fit her without cutting off her circulation was just wonderful to her.

The Stoopid Socks

After finishing 5 pr for Maggie started a pair for another friend and finished first sock before realizing I had used stitch count for Maggie's socks, no way would they fit Sheila, thus the stoopid sock was born, started another sock and got down to last dec and discovered I didn't have enuff stitches on this one either, so now forever called the 'even dumber' sock. Then did Sheila's socks (counting 3 times), now have finished the second stoopid sock (will go in gift basket for Xmas 08), back on the needles now is the 'even dumber' sock, this pair will have a solid colored foot instead of patterns all the way to the toe. And I will I think keep this pair to remind me that I ain't beyond making major counting mistakes.

Last pair ordered are off to NY. Then started now what is being refered to as the stoopid sock, made with same # stitches as tho for Maggie instead of what will fit person they are going to. So started again and will do proper size then when finished go back and make second stoopid sock.

The rosy hot pink (mostly Lorna's Laces) are done and washed, the 3rd pair are down past heel on second sock, will work on it tonight while watching Monday Night Football. Next in the queue will be a pair of mostly soft blues, again lots of LL's. Have more ideas than fingers.

Sunday & Saturday football is about ready to get started on a regular schedule (hallelujah). Finished first of Maggie's socks yesterday while watching first NFL game of the new season. For a change I turned it inside out and got a pix of it that way as well. I use a Revlon cuticle remover to fray the ends instead of cutting them, hoping that way first time socks are washed the ends disappear into knitting. Second sock will use same yarns but maybe in different order.

Success at last, first two tries had to be frogged, first time I knew once I got to the heel that it was going to be to small for my fat leg, 2nd time after about the 4 pattern and color knew I didn't like the way they were looking so frogged again. This time I like and they fit. Instead of planning colors just reached in bag and grabbed one. 2nd sock now on needles, promised myself that I would not start anything new until 2nd sock was done. Verra difficult. 2nd sock is finally done and guess what they don't fit either, to the gift basket they go (I should know better after all have made many, many pair of socks).

Travelling socks...I didn't get as much time as I thought to work on these socks while in Ireland. I did get as far as the cuffs done, and the rest of them will be finished in the cornfields.

The socks certainly had an interesting adventure, and will be filled with many memories of Ireland.

They look nice with jeans don't they? I didn't want to take these off after I slipped them on my feet for this photo. The yarn is so soft and I plan to wear these for pub dancing in Ireland. If that doesn't work out, perhaps a little intoxicated belly dancing. I want these socks to come home with stories to tell!

The pattern seems to be a perfect fit for my feet. There is just enough interest with the small stripe of the pattern that it isn't boring to knit. I used dpns to get things started then switched to two socks on one circular needle. It just seems to confuse me less that way. I do the same thing with the heel, slide them off on the dpns, do the heel then put both socks back on the long circular needle. It's weird, I know but it seems to work for me. (If you have read any of my posts before, this can't possibly be the first indicator that I am weird.) :o)

Monkey, knitted with Dave's Kalidescope yarn is once again going well. The downsize to #1 dpns is working much better and I'm having so much fun with both the pattern and Dave's yarn. I have one more repeat on this leg and then I'll start Monkey #2. I was kind of scared I'd bitten off more than I could chew, since in the past all of my socks have had 2x2 ribbing for the whole leg. But the instructions, so far are perfect and I practically cheer outloud every time I complete a row and I'm actually left with no stitches left over...or haven't ran out of stitches *G*

I know, I can hardly believe it myself. I have socks on the needles and something to show off for a change. I have made several pairs of baby socks..but real big people socks have been scarce.

These socks are my project for the Shut Up and Knit Your Cabin Cove. If you have never used yarn from Cabin Cove Mercantile..oh my you are missing out. I think this Kaleidosope yarn is the finest ever produced by the mayor of Cabin Cove.

The pattern is Dublin Bay, it's a simple pattern, easy to follow--so far!

Monstersockens

A partial skein of a hand painted Wildfoote was enuff to do the tops, heels and toes of latest pair of Monstersockens. I used up a bunch of odds & sods, little bits that aren't enuff to do a square in my afghan. Had them done last Sunday but a big winter storm knocked out my internet, just got it back up and running last night.

Wild & crazy Monstersockens are just more of the odds, using up each small ball then reaching into bag without looking and getting another small ball. Should finish first sock tomorrow while watching Sunday football.

Mini Socks

When I am in between socks, I make mini's, 2.5 inches high on 2 mm needles. Then as season dictates I give them away, put them on packages, tuck into a get well cards, etc., etc. Great fun and they don't use up much yarn.

Remodified Waffles and Monstersockens

Finished the remodified waffles watching football on Sunday, they fit perfect, are now in wash basket before I wear them. As soon as they were finished I started a pair of Monstersockens using the main color a ball of Wildfoot from the stash, all the little bits of leftovers that aren't big enuff to go into my mitered square afghan are being used up. Just knit until I run out of a color then add another small ball, do a couple of rows of the main color every once in awhile to kind of hang it all together.

Well, I had been knitting diligently on my Baudelaires, had hit gauge and everything, but the fabric was too loose - I was part way up the leg knitting away, hoping for the best thinking perhaps I might be able to shrink them to size....but the yarn of course is superwash, and the thought of throwing the socks in the washing machine in an attempt to felt them (even though the yarn is superwash) was too daunting. I rechecked my gauge, and things seemed fine, though as I mention, the knitted fabric has quite a bit of give to it - so much give that the sock was a bit loose on me, and then I put it on my husband's foot and it fit him fairly well, but still a little baggy in places. I started tinking back, and after a half hour of that, I tried doing a controlled rip back...and well, the socks are now restarted on smaller needles. *sigh*

Last Sunday's Socks

Okay, If you have read any of my blog you know that I have a blanket that I am working on (I use that term loosely) for my husband. This blanket has been dubbed "The Nemesis" by me and all my SnB friends.

I have been working on this blanket for literally five years. I will work on a square (it is crocheted) then put it away for months at a time. The blanket is not really my cup of tea if you know what I mean. The pattern is not hard and the colors are a little drab but what blanket for a guy is not Blue, Grey and Lt. Blue? What gets me is the GRANNY SQUARES! Never before had I done that many dang squares in my life and for some unknown reason (I think I was temporarily delusional from just having gotten married) I told my husband that I would make him this blanket. I have been living in agony over that decision for Five years.

I tell you all this to let you know that my BFF has had it with hearing about this blanket from John (my husband) and myself so...She made a deal with me. I make her a pair of socks and she will finish the blanket (I have all the squares started, more than half of them done and six strips put together). It was like the heavens opened up and the angels started to sing.

So, she gave me her sock yarn on a Thursday and by Sunday she had these:

Made out of Lion Brand Wool Ease on size 5 DPN ( I don't know how to do the whole magic loop thing...Need to learn). They were a total breeze...If you need a pair of socks fast, totally use that yarn! It made a really cushy sock that not only feels great but since is has wool in them they are warm and machine washable.

A pair of socks for the Nemesis? Done! Heck, I would even make two pairs!

Currently, I have four socks on the needles. Two of them are mates to two that I have already finished. The other two are the first socks of two pairs that need to be made (is that "two" complicated to follow?). I don't know about you but I feel like I am on Christmas Knitting overload right now.

Every waking minute is either spent knitting socks, thinking about socks or buying more sock yarn. Yesterday, while I was taking my daughter to school I almost ran a red light because I was trying to come up with a fairly simple yet intriguing Fair Isle pattern for the socks I would like to make my mom. Talk about hazardous to your health. Note to self...Focus on driving when driving and focus on knitting when knitting.

I hope all of you worker bees take time to appreciate the Honey every now and again. Hope to read some posts soon?

I've finally freed myself from craft fair prep and holiday knitting (not much this year) and I've cast on for a pair of Beaudelaires. Unfortunately, I'm only a few rows in, so they look like little toe caps rather than like socks. I'm loving the fact that this is a toe-up pattern, so I'm going to be able to knit knit knit right to the end of the yarn :D

Sock in the Grass

Last night the first Sock-ret sock went to Carnegie Hall. How did it get there? ... Well, it was kind of carried in a bag while it's knitter walked so no, it didn't practice, practice, practice. It also did not get it's picture taken on stage because I didn't bring the camera and felt self-conscious about taking out the cell phone. Next time. The sock did get to hear Maxim Vengarov and had a wonderful time. It had such a good time that now it is just a cuff. Oh, that's it's mate ...The second Sock-ret sock went on a bike ride and hung out on the grass in Central Park for a while progressing from just a ball of yarn to a full fledged cuff. It expects to get close to a heel by next weekend.

I finished my S'mores socks this week. The yarn is very soft and squishy. They feel wonderful to wear.

The yarn is Knitpicks sock yarn, in the S'mores colorway. The pattern is from Sensational Knitted socks.

I have two other pairs on the needles. Both are basic stockinette socks. I'm just loving the look of a simple sock right now. The stockinette shows off varigated yarns so nicely.

Approaching the finish

Well, with Socktoberfest activities, I've redirected my knitting into my socks :)
I'm fast approaching the end, with maybe a few more rounds to go before the toe decreases.

Question for you all who do top down socks (I rarely do, because I have such a hard time figuring out the whole fitting part, I love being able to try on my socks as I go) - Do you do your measuring by putting the sock on? Or by estimating it against your foot by pulling the knitting tight (tight enough for the fabric to be laying flat, but not really stretched out).

These socks will be my 4th pair - and my 2nd pair of cuff to toe...the first pair are just a mite short, but still wearable.

They Ride Again!

It has been quite a while since the socks took a bike ride so today they grabbed me and dragged me out the door. Here one is enjoying the view of Long Island City from a park just south of the United Nations.

And here it is waiting for goodies to be brought out from Chocolate Haven. It quickly jumped back in to the fanny pack when the chocolate ice cream sandwich came out.

Second Socks

I finished this sock on Saturday morning. I'm not knitting the second one, only because someone else is. I loved knitting it, even if it did give me lots of fits with frequent dropped stitches. I think Magic Loop would prevent that since I was dropping one YO at the end of a dpn about every few rounds.

This sock is my current in progress sock. Again, I am only knitting one of the pair. I received the already knit mate in the mail a few days ago, along with the yarn and needles to make this one, and some sweet goodies to snack on while I knit. I'm very much enjoying this knit as well, even though this sock is not even a fraternal twin to its mate, more like a kissing cousin, I guess. Same yarn, same needles, same pattern but apparently my gauge is much different from that of the knitter who started this pair. This is the sock she knit.

I tried to get a clear picture of our red clay for Red Dirt Knitter. It didn't work out, the colors are very washed out. The socks for instance are really a grey and lavender, the dirt is very red. Or, Socks On a Train. Yes, these are the same two pairs of socks that I have been showing you for weeks now. The difference is that they both now have heels. (The Dye-O-rama sock gained it's heel after this picture was taken.) They are both coming with me to see the Yarn Harlot in an hour or so. Wheee!

I am happy to announce that I've finally completed the Harlot socks. So named because I bought the yarn when I went to see the Yarn Harlot in Oklahoma City.

Specs: Regia Color Farbe 5033 Color Partie ...2 skeins with some left over. They could have been longer. Machine washable and dryable.
Needles: #2 DPNS

I LOVE this yarn. It has stood up to repeated frogging with noticeable wear or fuzzing..is soft and comfy. I want more! I don't know why I had so much trouble with these guys. My brain must have disconnected at some point so they spent a lot of time in time out. And now, I thought I'd really be glad to have them done..but I kinda miss them. I guess I'll have to cast on some more socks *G*

It's a 4 round pattern, rounds 2 and 4 are knit, round 3 is the same as round 1 except it shifts the start. I have no problems knitting round 1 but those exact same stitches in round 3 keep kicking my butt! I have just once again gotten to the end of round 3 to find the stitch count is short. I verified rounds 1 and 2 as accurate and I've reknit this round 3 twice now. Stitches seem to be accurate but one stitch short. Grrrr. I'm leaving it for weekday knitting only because I'm alone in the house then. Obviously, I can't knit this with any kind of distraction around.

I decided this week to send these finished socks to my boss in Texas for her birthday this week. That was the incentive I needed to finish these. They turned out well, and they are soft and warm. I am not sure how much of a chance she will get to wear them in Texas, but I know she will appreciate the effort.

I need to think about casting on another pair, but for right now I am basking in the glow of finishing the darn things.

Christmas is right around the corner - so, I am starting on a pair of socks for my daughter...she doesn't know...

The yarn is Plymouth Yarn - Encore DK - 75% acrylic and 25% wool. I love the feel of these socks! Soooo very soft. This will be a great alternative sock yarn for Scarlett too as she cannot wear 100% wool...My daughter on the other hand can - but, I know most everything goes in the washer and dryer...so, I am playing it safe.

...well, I was planning on turning the rest of my Lornas Laces Black Purl into a pair of plain anklets...and then I saw Kirsten's post and had to go check her blog for patterns - and I decided I'd give top down a try again (I sure hope I have enough yarn!) - so I ripped back the toes that I had knit and cast on for a pair of Nasturtium socks! Not much to show, as I've only got about 1cm worth of 2x2 ribbing to show so far!

I've made no progress on my socks - and I've decided for the sake of my sanity to not join the Sock Wars - instead, I spent the weekend finishing off the design and assembly of this:

A finished pair! For me, that's an accomplishment. I'm a slow knitter further hampered by my astounding ability to make mistakes while chatting. This is only the second pair of socks I have finished this 200sox year. I hope with this ring I will improve on that rate. It's a lousy picture but I was upside down to take it.

Finally I have gotten past the ribbing at the top of these socks. I kept measuring and measuring and I had more than the required sets of the pattern stitch but the socks were not growing at the rate they needed to. I think probably because my yarn is a lighter weight than the pattern called for. Finally I said enough is enough and started working on the heel flap/gusset area. What a mess this was. All went ok went knitting the flap, but trying to figure out how to pick up stitches when both of these socks were on one long circular needle began to get frustrating. So I pulled out my new set of Knit Picks #2 dpns and my oh my do I love using those needles. I need to get an order in for a second set. For now I have one sock on my standby bamboo and the other on the metal needles.

I am not sure if I will keep these separated until I reach the toe, but for now this seems like a much easier plan of attack.

I'm shifting into scarf mode, we'll see how much progress I make before next Sunday.

Sunday was our 28th anniversary and these darn socks would just not let me be. They followed us everywhere so what did I have to do, I finished them. They even joined us out for dinner at a nice seafood place.
I am happy to report that they are finally bound off and will be given to their giftee on Friday.

Yarn ideas, things he might need or would like that he wouldn't normally go out and get himself. Patterns, what ever, which ever... fill my mind with oodles and oodles of ideas, please? These socks have been on the needles for as long as I can remember and they've been worked on in a number of places.

I've cast on using the remainder of the yarn from this pair to see if I can hopefully get a pair of anklets - they don't look like much right now, and I'm kinda working on them by "feel" (no pattern being used at all) - they look kind of silly since I'm not even finished with the toe increases yet so I've no photos to share...

This is the very beginning of the second sock. Didn't get to work on it this week and had planned on some significant Sunday knitting but I got clunked in the nose so I had a headache and figured I would just screw it up. Changed plans and started a warshcloth. It would probably be easier on longer needles LOL but this works. AND you must see the nifty needle holder that my Favorite Color Pal, Ann, sent me. Those green caps are connected by an elastic thingy so all the needles fit inside and no way are any stitches going to fall off. And that's just one of the many fun things she gifted me with, including *Dave* yarn!

I tried to knit, but discovered my knitting needles were backwards and I needed something... nutty, silly to top off my youngest niece's care package. (a great kid)

So, like the good Aunt I am, I bought her a delightfully goofy pair of socks that she'll never wear but will make her laugh and she'll show everyone what her dorky Aunt from California sent her. Well... she might wear them around the dorm room. lol

Keeping up straight A's is challenge enough... I like to make sure the kids remember to smile.

Today she took me outside to see the new yard ornaments they bought at Tuesday Morning. They sort of do make a cute little fence in front of those huge plants...hostas she called them. She must have felt really sorry for me because she knit a bunch this week and got my pretty heel all done and is about 2 inches from finishing the foot...then we do the toe and I'll be a pretty sock...

I'm growing. She seems to be paying more attention to me when she realizes that she is going to be posting a progress photo. Bitchin' Mittens--ha! I seem to have gotten her attention for a few hours this week. I am still a bit miffed that I didn't get to go with her to Columbus for the yarn crawl. Too complicated to take along for mindless knitting time..blah blah blah. I heard from the hat that she didn't even knit a stitch. I was content to stay home, and not be in that hot vehicle all day while she wandered about flashing the VISA.

There was a meeting this week with all of the other resident socks. They are a bit pissed off that they just had intermittent starring roles online, while there is an entire blog dedicated to my development...whiners, all of them. I promised them a photo op to show them to the world.

There have been rumors that I may end up being a Christmas gift. The Florida Sunrise socks told me not to be too concerned, she seems to have separation anxiety when it comes to "HER" socks. I may be tucked into the sock drawer with the rest of them. She can be such a bitch you know, but she's mine and I love her. (Or I have to say that or I will end up on some UFO pile--)

Warning!! It's Summer and Socks are hiding in Sprite's drawer...

Today, as I, the non kniter join my sock loving, knitting friends in Sunday worship of thier colorful and creative socks, I find all of my socks over crowded but neatly folded in their little sock drawer, wondering if I'll ever wear them.

I try to not be overcome with sock envy, for I know any type of envy is unworthy of proper brain cell function. As I wipe up the drool from the corner of my mouth, eyeballing all the creative colors of my new found friends socks, I wonder, "Where do they live? Are the breaking and entering laws in their state bad? There is a chance I might not get caught stealing these delightful warm and cozy socks even if it's too hot to wear them where I live."

Yeah, we are turning her in to the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Socks... She can run, but she can't hide. This morning in the heat and humidity she had the nerve to take us to the laundromat. We were very excited when she put us in this cool new bag, little did we know what was in store for us.

A bit of heat as she loaded us into the car for the ride in, but soon the AC was on and we were feeling fine. Next thing we knew she was dragging us into the gates of hell aka the laundromat. Ceiling fans schmeiling fans, all they were doing was moving around the hot air, and not very well. We peeked out of the bag to see what she was up to and watched her dragging in mountains of laundry--there was a can of diet Sunkist soda to snuggle up to, that was at least a little relief from the heat.

Once the laundry was underway she returned to us. We pressed ourselves up to the side of the bag hoping to hide from her hot little clutches. She reached in and pulled out our pal diet soda and his date peanut butter crackers and we watched in horror as she sipped on one and crunched on the other. DOES THIS WOMAN HAVE NO SHAME!?!?!?

It must have been too hot for her to put her grubby little hands in the bad to take us out--whew, breathing a sigh of relief. It didn't help the terror we felt as we saw another pair of handknitted socks tumbling around in the dryer...

STOP THE MADNESS!!!!
